If the combination of Toyota and BMW sounds crazy to you, you are not in the minority! However, Toyota and BMW have been discussing a partnership to build a two-door, rear-drive sports car since 2011. It has been kept very low-key, but now there is some news that brings this sports car to the forefront of everyone’s mind.
The new rumor is that the car will be built by the Austria manufacturing firm, Magna Steyr. Magna Steyr is the company that creates the Mercedes G-Wagen, so they know what they are doing!
BMW CEO Harold Krueger states that, “BMW has a long roadster tradition” which is why the replacement of the BMW Z4 is crucial. The new roadster will be the BMW Z5, but the Toyota sports car has yet to be named. We are hoping it might be the new Toyota Supra!
The car production is rumored to begin in 2018 and have a target of 60,000 cars per year. We are waiting to see if the car is the new Toyota Supra or a new sports car, so for now we will try to be patient!
Every year, Toyota strives to update their model line-up with vehicles made up of all sorts of materials, in an effort to increase power while maintaining fuel efficiency. But have you ever imagined a Toyota made entirely of wood?
This wooden Toyota model, which is being referred to as the Setsuna concept, was built using multiple types of wood – including Japanese cedar for the exterior panels and Japanese birch for the vehicle’s frame.
In a press release, Toyota explained that they decided to use wood to make the vehicle because it is a material that is durable, although it changes over time. This reflects how a vehicle changes as it is passed through generations, Toyota added.
Of course, the Setsuna concept model isn’t for sale and will almost certainly not go into production, but the model is fascinating nonetheless. For more information on current models or to check out our enormous selection, visit us anytime at Capital Toyota.
Toyota drivers tend to be concerned with fuel efficiency and emissions, which is why they choose cars like the Prius or the Camry Hybrid when they shop at Capital Toyota. It’s also why they care about how the cars are made and where they come from.
In its latest efforts to make the process of getting an efficient car into your hands, Toyota developed a car hauler that runs on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which emits about 85% less overall particulate matter, including 10% less carbon dioxide. In other words, it makes your Toyota cleaner before you even start it.
The truck was built as an experiment to evaluate its performance and efficiency compared to the current trucks, which run on diesel. Initially, the placement of alternate fuel tanks presented a challenge to the designers, as it interfered with the over-the-cab head rack, but they were able to get around it through some engineering wizardry.
The CNG truck is expected to run an average of 7,000 to 8,000 miles per month. After enough tests, Toyota may elect to convert all of its car haulers to CNG power. Incredible!
We lost the Toyota Supra sometime ago, its departure evoking more than a few tears from Toyota enthusiasts and performance fans at large. Some recent clues indicate that Toyota may indeed soon make a performance car again.
The Toyota FT-1 concept rolled into Detroit at the auto show there last year. The chatter started immediately, “Is this it? Are our days of waiting over?” Reactions were strong. Toyota received a lot of feedback on the design of the FT-1 concept from enthusiasts and designers.
You take one look at the FT-1 and think fast. Aerodynamic as all get-out, it’s got large, prominent alloy-wheels, a long, sculpted hood and a read-end that somehow calls to mind the rear of a jet.
Since Detroit, Toyota has been showing the concept off at various auto shows. The very interesting thing to note is that Toyota “has slightly updated the styling of the FT-1 to bring it more in line with what potential buyers want to see,” according to New York Daily Business. Now, why would they care enough to update the design if the Toyota FT-1 concept wasn’t clearly meant for production? Our thoughts exactly.

Is this new creation from Toyota a car or a motorcycle? Well, it might just be a little bit of both!
Typically Toyota is not known for motorcycles or scooters, but then again, there is nothing typical about this newly unveiled three-wheeled i-ROAD motorcycle. The concept i-ROAD prototype was recently unveiled at a TED Conference where Toyota allowed people to test drive its vision for the future of mobility.
The Toyota i-ROAD steering uses a single steering wheel in the rear behind the two front drive-tires. The process of turning the vehicle involves the driver initiating the turn with the steering wheel and onboard gyros then adjusting the tilt angle by changing the level of the front two tires. Although it sounds complicated, those who drive it say it is intuitive and fun to drive.
“In the 20 years I’ve been in the car business, this is the most fun, interesting ride dynamic I’ve ever had because of the rear-steer and the active lean system,” says Jason Shulz of Toyota Motor Company Sales U.S.A.
Pricing details have yet to be determined, but the battery driven motor scooter is said to have a purported range of 30 miles with a full-charge from a standard outlet taking just three hours.
