Automatic Braking Works, Will Become Standard for Many Automakers

Toyota is among ten automakers who are pledging to make auto-braking standard in its new vehicles, marking one of the largest auto safety announcements since the introduction of standard airbags in the 1980s.

Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is a technology that uses a combination of radar, lasers, and cameras to monitor and detect potential collisions, and automatically applies the brakes to lessen the effects or eliminate an impact. The technology, once reserved for high-end luxury vehicles, has proven incredibly successful, now making its way into just about every size car. Now, autonomous braking systems are more affordable and available than ever before.

It could take several years for these automakers to get the technology in all of their cars, but Toyota has said that by the end of 2017 at least it will offer automatic braking systems in option packages for almost its entire lineup.

“We are entering a new era of vehicle safety, focused on preventing crashes from ever occurring, rather than just protecting occupants when crashes begin,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in an IIHS statement.

Here at Capital Toyota, we expect that this announcement will encourage other automakers to jump on the bandwagon. Look for automatic braking systems to become more available in the coming years!

The 2016 Toyota Prius’ Style goes Sporty

Toyota has unveiled its new 2016 Prius, and forget for a moment its great fuel efficiency—this car boasts serious style. Say goodbye to the Prius of days past – in an effort to breathe new life into the efficient and wildly-successful hybrid, the 2016 Toyota Prius’ style is sleek, edgy, and modern.

2016 Toyota Prius’ style

Because gas prices are at the lowest level seen in years, consumers don’t necessarily need super-efficient vehicles. Instead, Toyota hopes that a refreshed design and long list of exciting features will make the Prius desirable not only for its incredible efficiency, but for head-turning, modern style.

“We’ve got the whole package now,” said Bill Fay, general manager of the Toyota Division in the United States. “People will want to buy this car for more than just the fuel efficiency.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, the 2016 Toyota Prius will earn about 55 mpg in combined driving, a 10 percent improvement over the 2015 version. It will be 2 inches longer than the current car, it will sit almost an inch lower, and get a new suspension which will give it a lower center of gravity. Drivers should expect sportier handling and a smoother, more refined ride.

Look for the 2016 Toyota Prius to arrive at Capital Toyota early next year!

Helpful Car Cleaning Tips from Capital Toyota

car cleaning tips

It’s important to keep your car clean—both inside and out. Here are some car cleaning tips to ensure that both the interior and exterior of your vehicle stay looking good.

1.  Clean the inside window surfaces to prevent surface smog formation.

2.  If you have cloth or vinyl car seats, vacuum and shampoo them (and the carpet). For leather seating, use a cleaner and preservative.

3.  Dust (or purchase auto care wipes for) the dashboard, console, and interior door panels.

4.  For the exterior, buy a quality concentrated car wash and follow the instructions, being sure to use a sponge or mitt rather than rags, which can scratch your car.

5.  If you wax your car, don’t do it when its still hot from running or sitting in direct sunlight—the heat will make the wax hard to remove and leave a streaky finish.

Follow these tips, and you can keep your car looking like new! For more car cleaning tips, contact us today at Capital Toyota and we’d be glad to help.

Toyota Celebrates Innovation in the Automotive Industry

Earlier this month, Toyota celebrated innovation in the automotive industry by recognizing many of its engineers and researchers who have been awarded patents during the past year. One of these patent recipients was Nora Arellano, who was recognized for receiving the 1000th patent issued to Toyota’s North American Manufacturing and Engineering headquarters.

Innovation in the Automotive Industry

Arellano’s patent was for side curtain airbags used in the Toyota Tundra. This was her eighth patent. She was also included in the list of “Michigan’s Most Valuable Millennials” by Corp! Magazine.

In addition to Arellano, 114 other Toyota engineers and researchers were honored at the event. Toyota North American CEO Jim Lentz spoke to the group at the Michigan Science Center.

“These patents represent your brainpower, your innovation, your diligence, your hard work and your passion,” Lentz said, in a statement. “Patents were essential in creating Toyota in 1937 and are equally important today in protecting the innovative products and processes you invent to make our customers’ experience the best in the business.”

Here at Capital Toyota, we are proud to be a part of a company that recognizes the importance of innovation.

2015 Toyota Camry Keeps its Status as America’s Best Selling Car

The battle to be America’s best-selling car is constant and heated, perhaps more so now than ever before, since the sedan market has experienced such an incredible explosion over the last couple years. That added level of competition makes the Camry’s continued reign atop the sales charts even more impressive. Even more impressive, the Camry sells just behind the three pickup trucks atop the American sales market..

2015 Toyota Camry

Of course, when you check out the Camry, you’ll easily see why it’s such a popular fan favorite. It has a starting price of just under $23,000, gets up to 35 mpg on the highway, and comes with all kinds of options too—from the Entune infotainment system to several different powertrains. In fact, you can get the Toyota Camry with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 3.5-liter V6, or even a hybrid powertrain setup.

| 2015 Toyota Camry Model Overview |

With excellent fuel economy, powertrain options, and tons of technology, it’s certainly no surprise to us here at Capital Toyota that the Camry continues to sell so well. In fact, the Camry has sold 134,571 units through April, and that momentum should continue all through the rest of the year. Toyota Mirai Made First-Ever Hydrogen-Powered Pace Car

Hydrogen-Powered Pace Car

Toyota took its groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell technology to an unexpected place—the racetrack. The Japanese carmaker’s fuel cell vehicle, known as the Toyota Mirai, recently debuted as the pace car of the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. This race occurred earlier this month at the Richmond International Raceway and allowed Toyota to show off its eco-friendly vehicle that emits only water out of its tailpipe.

“Having a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle pace the Toyota Owners 400 is a historic moment for both Toyota and NASCAR and we’re proud it’s the Toyota Mirai,” said Ed Laukes, vice president of marketing, performance, and guest experience for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “ Bringing the Mirai to Richmond to pace this important race is another way for Toyota to showcase our innovation and environmental leadership.”

To become a pace car for the Toyota Owners 400, the Mirai had to undergo testing by NASCAR at the racetrack. It had to meet specific performance requirements to pace the 400-mile NSCS race, which it did with ease. This Mirai is the first-ever hydrogen-powered pace car used by NASCAR, setting a new milestone in history.
