January saw the unveiling of a number of new, different nameplates via the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Among them was the new Toyota Camry debut, the first appearance of the 2018 model year across the entire world. Though Toyota brought over 45 vehicles to the 2017 Detroit auto show, the popularity and reputation of the Camry nameplate made it one of the most anticipated reveals at the event.
The 2018 Camry is all-new from the ground up, with Toyota’s New Global Architecture that the brand has been expanding across its entire lineup. Toyota’s designers also recognized the American market’s shift away from mid-size sedans and toward crossovers, so the new Camry incorporates design cues from the upcoming C-HR crossover. The interior has also been designed for a more sweeping, sculptural look.
The goal in designing the next generation of the Toyota Camry was to deliver a model that was more sporty, dynamic, and overall fun in terms of performance and capability. When Toyota reps unveiled the Toyota Camry debut in Detroit, they announced that “drivers will notice dramatic improvements” within seconds of getting behind the wheel. Judging from reviews of the new Prius, which has also implemented the new architecture, that assessment is spot on.
